There are two kinds of respect – one where people fear you because of your status, power, or authority. And the other kind – is where they truly admire you for the person you are.
I see these kinds of respect every day at the gym. Its really quite evident with the security and staff. You can see the people they cater to because they ‘have to’ [otherwise they lose their job]. Its more of a routine thing – part of the job.
But when they come to cater to someone they truly admire – there is a special smile on their faces and a certain kind of joy in helping you.
The second is always more powerful. You may lose money, status, authority – but your will never lose the kindness, sincerity and conviction that people really look up to.
Strive to do things that will cause people to respect you.
